I admit it, I’m a whole milk junkie

i-admit-it-im-a-whole-milk-junkie

I was making up some packet pasta for lunch today (I know, I know – but I like it. I’m the anti-foodie in many ways) and I noticed it didn’t call for 1/2 cup of milk – it specified 2% milk. My Kraft Singles proclaim that they’re made with 2% milk. Whole milk mozzarella cheese is a big deal in the shredded-cause-I’m-too-lazy-and-like-my-knuckles-intact section of the grocery store.

Now, me being me, anything short of whole milk simply doesn’t make it into my kitchen. Since Starbucks went to 2% milk being it’s standard milk, I’ve had to become “that woman” who can’t just order a latte, cause now I have to say, “Large latte with whole milk.” (No, I don’t use their made up sizes. More than once I’ve just ordered a Bigassed latte and gotten just what I needed.)

I hate that whole milk has become so demonized over the years. It was all that was ever in our house growing up and neither my brother or myself are any the worse for wear. I remember going to friends houses and dreading seeing skim milk come out of the fridge. It looked like water that had some milk mixed into it, and frankly, tasted about the same.

But whole milk is awesome. It hasn’t made me fat. It’s made my recipes wonderful. And I will stick with it until the day I die.

Now I am going to go have a glass of milk with a couple pieces of leftover Halloween candy.

And that is your health food diatribe for the day.

So, what’s for dinner?

so-whats-for-dinner

I struggle with meal planning. A large part of it is that I don’t really like doing “big” grocery shopping trips to start with. So, I’ve gone back to my old standby – peapod. It is SO much easier to plan around what is on sale, and I can just keep adding to the list throughout the week. And they deliver!

Sure, there are some things they don’t carry, and there will always be those trips to the market for one or two things, or something special, but that is still easier than trying to muck through a grocery store and get a week or two of food and try to plan on the fly around what is on sale.

Their meats almost all come cryovac’d, and honestly, they do a better job of picking out produce than I do. Their specials section is easy to navigate and makes it a breeze to make the decisions of “what will be on tap this week.” That and I don’t have to haul the heavy stuff – always a bonus.

They’ll be delivering this evening and upcoming culinary events (all on sale!) will include steaks, porkchops, salmon, smoked salmon pinwheels, kielbasa, and a swing at sweet potato french fries. I’m finally getting my head back in the game since I’ve been out of town, and tomorrow it’s time to get back into Superwoman mode. :)

Had to drop everything and take off for a family crisis – everything is as under control as it can be, should be home early next week.

Can’t wait to get back in my kitchen!!!

Milk: $125.00

milk-125-00

Not going to the grocery store hungry: Priceless.

I love those MasterCard ads because they do describe me WAY too well. Except that I’ll go to the market for milk, get a bunch of other stuff, and then forget the milk.

Today I do have a couple minor gripes with my local grocery store. To me, it would make sense to have all the varieties of onions in the same place in the produce section, preferably right next to the garlic. Nope – the red and white onions are clear across the produce section from the yellow onions and garlic. WHY??

The other thorn in my side is automated checkouts. They’re fantastic if you have just a few things, and I try very hard to avoid them if I have enough to fill a cart vs. a little basket. However, there weren’t enough full service lanes open today, so automated it was. Issues…

– If you end up with “too many items” at the end of the conveyor belt, the system will not let you scan anything new until you bag those items. If you’re lucky, they have a person bagging at the auto checkouts. Not today.

– Age restricted purchases. They don’t immediately alert the keycarrier on duty, but instead hold everything up when you try to pay. C’mon, just start flashing the light the minute my evil cough medicine gets scanned.

– It wouldn’t take my coupon! It was an instant coupon (the kind you peel off the package) for $2, and required a trip to the service desk.

Now, one very good thing about my market is the soup/salad bar. A couple times a week they have a sweet/savory chili – when it’s cold, I simply cannot resist snagging a container for lunch. (But I feel so guilty! I can make my own chili!) But it’s tasty.
